At a national level, the National Transport Authority has responsibility for securing the provision of public passenger land transport services. This includes the provision of subvented bus and rail services by Bus Éireann, Dublin Bus and Irish Rail. The Authority also licences public bus passenger services. On January 1, 2011, the National Transport Authority assumed responsibility for the regulation of the small public service vehicle sector (i.e. taxis, hackneys and limousines). The Authority also has responsibility for the development of an integrated transport system within the Greater Dublin Area.
