Minister of State for Tourism and Sport Michael Ring TD this evening congratulated Irish golfer Paul McGinley following the announcement that he has been chosen to lead Europe's defence of the 2014 Ryder Cup.

Speaking this evening, Minister Ring said: "Paul becomes Ireland's first captain of this event and in doing so will lead Europe's spirited defence of the Ryder Cup in Gleagles in 2014. He is a very popular and astute player on the tour and I know in particular he enjoys the tactical and team aspects of this very special tournament."

Minister Ring concluded: The 2014 Ryder Cup is shaping up to be a mouthwatering event as Europe bids to retain it's title. I would like to congratulate Paul on his worthy achievement and wish him every success in the detailed preparations that lie ahead for the European team.
