Russian Crewman airlifted to Hospital by Coast Guard Helicopter – 180 miles North West of Mayo Coast

Wednesday 8 March 2017

The Sligo based Coast Guard helicopter R118 completed an early morning medical evacuation (medevac) of a crewman requiring urgent medical attention from a Russian fishing vessel some 180 miles North West of Erris Head Co. Mayo.

The operation was coordinated by the Coast Guard Rescue Coordination Centre in Malin Head. Owing to the distance involved communication support, known as Top Cover, was provided by a second Coast Guard helicopter, the Dublin based R116. Both helicopters refuelled at Blacksod prior to transiting to the scene.

The Russian crewman was airlifted at 0430 and transferred to Sligo University Hospital where he was admitted shortly before Six AM.
