Minister for Transport, Tourism and Sport, Shane Ross TD and Brendan Griffin TD, Minister of State with special responsibility for Tourism and Sport, have today congratulated the Irish team on its performance at the 2017 Para Athletics World Championships in London.
Minister Ross said: “I am delighted to congratulate all of the athletes who represented Ireland at the Para Athletics World Championships in London last week. It was another hugely successful performance by the team, bringing home 7 medals. Congratulations to the medal winners Jason Smyth and Michael McKillop who each achieved two gold medals and to the silver medallists in discus - Niamh McCarthy, Orla Barry and Noelle Lenihan. These results are a tribute to the hard work, commitment and dedication of all the team to reach the highest levels in your sport and you have once again proved yourselves to be excellent ambassadors for Ireland.”
Minister Griffin said: "Ireland's proud tradition in Paralympic sport has been further enhanced by the team’s magnificent performance in London last week. Your achievements at these Championships will provide encouragement and inspiration to many young athletes throughout Ireland who aspire to represent their country. Great credit must also go to Team Manager James Nolan and his coaching team for all their work in preparing the Irish team for these Championships."
