Shane Ross TD, Minister for Transport, Tourism and Sport welcomes the selection of Mr. Eamonn Brennan, Chief Executive of the Irish Aviation Authority, as the next Director General of EUROCONTROL.
EUROCONTROL is a major European aviation organisation, spanning 41 European member states. It oversees and controls all the air routes, and manages the air traffic control network in terms of capacity, air traffic flows, civil-military coordination and slots etc. It is central to the functioning of the Air Traffic Control system in Europe. EUROCONTROL is a wider organisation than the EU having 41 member states including Norway, Turkey, Ukraine and several Eastern European States and all the EU states.
Mr. Brennan was selected through a competitive process culminating in a decision today, Friday 16th June, by the EUROCONTROL Permanent Commission, the key governing body of EURCONTROL, meeting in Brussels.
Minister Ross said that Mr. Brennan’s appointment is a tribute to his experience and expertise which has been evident in his excellent stewardship of the Irish Aviation Authority as Chief Executive since 2004. The appointment also offers a further opportunity to build on Ireland’s prominent position in shaping European and world aviation. The appointment will be for a five year period from the beginning of 2018.
