Ring launches €2.6M festival package and 2012 Home Holiday Campaign

Minister of State for Tourism and Sport Michael Ring has today (Thursday) announced funding of €2.6 million for 34 national festivals taking place all around Ireland this year.

The festivals include everything from next week’s St Patrick’s Festival in Dublin, to the Galway Arts Festival, Wexford Opera Festival, the Cat Laughs Comedy Festival in Kilkenny, the Rose of Tralee, Guinness Cork Jazz Festival, and many others.

The funding was announced as Minister Ring launched Fáilte Ireland’s 2012 Home Holiday campaign, which kicks off this weekend. Further funding will be announced in the coming weeks for a number of additional festivals, particularly regional events.

“Tourism is key to our economic recovery and I’m especially pleased to launch such a strong package of festivals for this year. Festivals are magnets for visitors, from home and abroad, and they bring revenue and economic activity into every corner of Ireland. This funding is a serious investment in tourism and helps us to boost growth in a sector which already delivers jobs and almost €5 billion in revenue.

“We are also launching Fáilte Ireland’s 2012 Home Holiday campaign. I would encourage everyone to check out the action-packed festivals calendar at discoverireland.ie. Whether your taste is music, comedy or theatre, there’s something there for everybody.”

To coincide with the announcement of festival funding, Minister Ring confirmed that Fáilte Ireland’s 2012 Discover Ireland domestic holiday campaign kicks off this weekend. More than half a million ‘Spring Breaks’ special offer brochures, containing up to 200 special offers, will be distributed through the national press. The brochures will also be distributed through tourism information offices and will be accompanied by a national radio campaign.

The Discover Ireland TV campaign will start on March 12th and will run right through the peak holiday period, from March to August. The campaign will also run in cinemas across the country, targeting family movies, between from March and May. You can check out the large number of special offers available at discoverireland.ie/special-offers

The large number of festivals and events around Ireland will be promoted via Discover Ireland guides and on local radio stations, reaching around 854,000 listeners weekly. Online, the campaign will target key audiences on the most relevant sites in a creative and highly effective manner utilising all the latest social media.

Fáilte Ireland’s Head of Marketing, Orla Carroll today emphasised: “The Home holiday market remains highly important to Irish tourism and our research indicates that this year more Irish families than ever will be staying at home. This year’s Discover Ireland campaign aims to capitalise on that fact and present Irish families with a menu of fun, feasts and festivals, as well as great value accommodation offers, to entice them to get out there and re-discover their home country.”
