Ring congratulates Irish swimmer’s heroic Oceans 7 achievement

Minister of State for Tourism & Sport Michael Ring has congratulated Irishman Steve Redmond for his ‘heroic achievement’ in the Oceans 7 swimming challenge.

“I’d like to congratulate Steve Redmond on being the first person to complete the full Oceans 7 challenge, one of the world’s most difficult swimming contests.

“Steve successfully crossed the Tsugaru Strait in Japan yesterday, the last of the seven channels which make up the challenge”, Minister Ring said.

Since starting out in 2009 Steve has swum across the English Channel, and the North Channel between Northern Ireland and Scotland. Other stretches included the Gibraltar Strait between Spain and Morocco, the Catalina Channel in California, the Molokai Channel in Hawaii, and the Cook Strait which divides New Zealand.

“We can’t imagine the effort which Steve put into this challenge. This is a proud day for him and his family,” Minister Ring said.
