Minister of State for Tourism and Sport Michael Ring TD has paid tribute to Louis Kilcoyne, the former FAI President and former Vice President of the Olympic Council of Ireland who passed away today.
"Louis Kilcoyne made a major contribution to sport in Ireland, both nationally and internationally through his involvement in soccer and in the Olympic Council of Ireland. He also represented the Olympic movement at FIFA on their Youth Committee."
Minister Ring continued; "Louis may be best remembered as the driving force behind one of the most remarkable soccer matches ever played in Dublin, when the World Champions (Brazil) played a team of international players from both the Republic and Northern Ireland, (Shamrock Rovers XI) in 1973. Brazil won that match 4-3, but the match was remarkable not just for the sensational result against the World Champions but because the Rovers XI team represented the combined talent of the Republic and Northern Ireland soccer teams."
The Minister concluded; "Louis was a dedicated, committed contributor to Irish sport and I would like to extend my sympathies to his wife Theresa and all the Kilcoyne family. May he rest in peace."
