Minister Varadkar welcomes appointment of Eamonn Coughlan to Seanad

Minister for Transport, Tourism and Sport Leo Varadkar has welcomed the appointment of Eamonn Coughlan to Seanad Éireann.

Mr Coughlan has been appointed to the Seanad by An Taoiseach, Enda Kenny.

“I would like to extend my warm congratulations and welcome to Eamonn Coughlan on his appointment to Seanad Éireann.  As the Minister for Transport, Tourism and Sport, I am very pleased that a sporting hero, athlete and Olympian will take up a seat in the new Seanad.

“Mr Coughlan is also a constituent of mine, being a resident of Castleknock in Dublin West, which makes his appointment even more welcome.

“By appointing a large number of non-political Senators, the Taoiseach and Tánaiste have done much to restore the Seanad to its original role as an Upper House representing civil society, minorities and excellence. Such a role was envisaged by the Free State Constitution, and the founding fathers of the State.

“To those who were cynical about the new Government’s commitment to new politics, this is your answer.”
